New York CNN —If you took an American Airlines flight in the 1960s, you’d be wined and dined from the Coach-class “Royal Coachman” menu. “Meal service was once a point of pride,” said Henry Harteveldt, who covers the travel industry for Atmosphere Research Group. Meal service was a big focus of [competition] because entertainment options were more limited,” Harteveldt said. The September 11 attacks accelerated the decline of free airline meals. Airline meals had been the brunt of jokes and criticism for decades, but now people miss them.

We had different ideas about what our trip should beWhen my mom had initially invited me to "visit stone circles in the UK," I had misunderstood this as "taking a selfie at Stonehenge." Then there were the stone circles. We never fought about my queerness or the fact that I was never going to attend medical school. AdvertisementThus, at that moment, in front of Llywelyn, I realized that I'd gotten closer to my mom on this trip. She'd accomplished her goal of teaching me about my heritage, whereas I'd realized that, to her, I was the Prince of Wales.

Tokyo CNN —A major Japanese food supplier has recalled more than 100,000 packs of a popular brand of sliced white bread after rat parts were found inside some loaves. They were found in a batch of white “chojuku” bread — or super fermented bread, known for its extra chewy texture — manufactured by a factory based in western Tokyo prefecture, according to the company. White bread is a staple for many Japanese people when they feel like a Western-style meal, or “yoshoku,” as an alternative to traditional Japanese food. Founded in 1920, Pasco is a major supplier of baked goods that employs more than 3,700 staff at 12 factories across the country. The 15-second commercial, released months ago, features a family excitingly declaring their love of good toast as breakfast, accompanied by a voice-over saying: “We put nothing unnecessary in it.”“I love chojuku bread.

A bettor could score a payout of $1.7 million if the Oklahoma City Thunder win the NBA title. The original $100 bet was a parlay ticket that also included championships for the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Chiefs, both of which have happened. The parlay ticket was purchased via DraftKings and cost Shelton just $100. Now he stands to win $1.7 million, representing a potential return of 1,690,900% if the bet pans out. There is an entire separate industry dedicated to playing matchmaking between high-rolling sports bettors and opportunities with high initial buy-ins, like Shelton's parlay ticket.

“Anti-Israel protests on college campuses threaten Jewish students,” says the ad, which was shared first with CNN. While supporters of the legislation say it will help combat antisemitism on college campuses, opponents argue it overreaches and threatens to chill free speech. Last week, the Louisiana Republican visited Columbia University to meet with Jewish students and hold a press conference where he called on the university’s president to resign. CAIR has reported record incidents of Islamophobia on campus, and the Anti-Defamation League has recorded a historic number of incidents of violence and threats against Jewish students. Some Jewish students have said they were threatened by protesters and encountered antisemitic rhetoric at some of the rallies. The White House and multiple governors have voiced support for Jewish students and urged protesters and universities to exercise restraint.

Ron DeSantis met for several hours in Miami on Sunday, according to a source close to Trump. The meeting — their first conversation since DeSantis dropped out of the GOP primary in January — was arranged through Steve Witkoff, Trump’s longtime friend and luxury real estate developer, at the request of DeSantis, according to the source. Witkoff is hosting a fundraiser in Miami for Trump next Sunday, according to a copy of the invite obtained by CNN. DeSantis told donors and supporters at an appreciation retreat earlier this month that he would help fundraise for Trump, two sources familiar with the details told CNN. Following his failed White House bid, DeSantis endorsed Trump in the Republican primary, but he has not appeared with the presumptive GOP nominee at any campaign events since.

CNN —Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday night downplayed the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, which led to a woman’s death, as a “peanut” compared to the demonstrations happening across the US against Israel’s actions in Gaza. Public officials have condemned incidents of antisemitism that have occurred amid the protests and raised concerns over the safety of Jewish students. Trump also accused Biden in the post of hating Israel and the Jewish people, but hating the Palestinian people even more. “I condemn the antisemitic protests, that’s why I’ve set up a program to deal with that,” Biden said when questioned about the events at Columbia University in New York. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson visited the campus on Wednesday to call for Columbia University President Minouche Shafik to resign if she cannot bring order to the campus.

Those contrasting perspectives have gone down as demonstrating a gulf of understanding between the races. That gulf persists, but it narrows apace, and if the verdict came down today, it would be a lot less perplexing to many white people than it was back then. We might even see some of them applauding along with Black people. It isn’t that these people would celebrate Simpson himself, any more than the jurors did back in 1995. The evidence of Simpson’s deed was overwhelming despite the ineptitude of the prosecution team.

At the very beginning of Si Lewen’s “The Parade,” the series of untitled antiwar works on artist’s board that forms the pulsing heart of a new exhibition curated by the cartoonist Art Spiegelman, four sketchy, ecstatic boys and girls stride into the endless possibility of unmarked white gesso. In the second panel, a family leaning out their window catches sight of someone waving a flag. The flag itself is also faint and white, but the family is surrounded by an ominous black shadow. And as that single flag turns into a parade, and the parade acquires rifles, swords, black banners and German helmets, Lewen’s painting and drawing — he made “The Parade” around 1950 with a mix of crayon, ink, paint and graphite — gets denser and darker.

Property taxes, the lifeblood of local governments and school districts, are one of the most powerful and stealthy engines of racism and wealth inequality our nation has ever produced. In theory, the property tax would seem to be an eminently fair one: The higher the value of your property, the more you pay. This results in wealthy communities enjoying lower effective tax rates while generating more tax revenues; at the same time, poorer ones are forced to tax property at higher effective rates while generating less in return. And for all the taxes Black people paid, they got little to nothing in return. During those years, the nation’s real estate industry made white-owned property in white neighborhoods worth more because it was white.
